Look at the Pekáry-ház. Its elegant facade speaks of a bygone era. This stunning building at Király Street 47 stands as a testament to Budapest’s rich history. Built between 1847 and 1848 by Ferenc Brein it was commissioned by Imre Pekáry a city deputy.
The Pekáry-ház was remarkable for its time. Imagine a Budapest mostly consisting of one or two story buildings. This was one of the first three-story structures. Its unique blend of Romantic and Gothic architectural styles made it truly stand out. The intricate details are amazing. Note the contrasting decorations above the gate. You see David stars on the balcony brackets yet Hungarian national figures adorn the wall niches. Perhaps a reflection of the neighborhood’s Jewish community and the building’s patron.
The Pekáry-ház has also seen its share of challenges. Severe damage occurred during World War II. Restoration wasn’t completed until 1965. Unfortunately the original red paint was lost. Even more recent renovations have restored many of the building’s features.
The Pekáry-ház wasn’t just a grand residence. Famous residents called it home. Gyula Krúdy lived here with his first wife Bella Spiegler between 1899 and 1901. The building even served as a synagogue and a locksmith’s shop. It’s known for having hosted various activities. An operetta singing school was housed here at one point.
One of the building’s most enduring legends centers on the gargoyle above the third-floor balcony. At some point before the turn of the century its head fell off. The exact date and circumstances remain a mystery. Krúdy himself mentioned this headless gargoyle in his writings adding to the building’s allure.
The Pekáry-ház more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living piece of Budapest’s past. Its architectural beauty speaks of its grandeur. Its legends and history make it a remarkable place to visit. So take a moment admire this iconic building. Remember the stories it holds and the lives it has touched. The Pekáry-ház is a treasure of Budapest and a symbol of the city’s enduring spirit.
