Who was the first Hungarian pilot to grace the skies above Budapest and the Adriatic Sea? Right here, before the Prodam Guidó Plaque, we uncover the story of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of flight. Prodam Guido, born in Fiume in 1882, wasn’t just a pilot. He was a pharmacist, an aircraft designer, and a true pioneer of Hungarian aviation. The Prodam Guidó Plaque commemorates his daring feats and unwavering passion.

Prodam Guido’s life took a dramatic turn in 1910 when his wife passed away. He abandoned his pharmacy, driven by grief and a newfound fascination with flight. He arrived in Budapest, drawn to the experimental aviation scene at Rákos-mező. Just a year later, in 1911, he made history by piloting the Horvath III/A aircraft over Budapest, becoming the first Hungarian to achieve this feat. The Prodam Guidó Plaque stands as a testament to this pivotal moment in Hungarian aviation history. He then constructed his own aircraft and flew it to Fiume, becoming the first to fly over the Adriatic Sea. This daring adventure, however, ended in a crash landing, though Prodam Guido miraculously survived. Undeterred, he returned to Budapest, rebuilt his aircraft, and officially obtained his pilot’s license, becoming only the third licensed pilot in Hungary.

Prodam Guido’s dedication came at a great personal cost. He invested heavily in his passion, spending 400,000 koronas over four years. This financial strain, coupled with his Italian heritage, led to his estrangement from his wealthy family in Fiume. When World War I erupted, his father disowned him for his loyalty to Hungary. Despite previous injuries, he eventually served as a military pilot. During a flight in 1918, his plane was hit at an altitude of 4800 meters. This incident resulted in sixteen months as a prisoner of war and a permanent disability to his right arm.

After the war, the decorated war hero returned to his pharmaceutical roots, opening a pharmacy in Budapest. He humorously nicknamed it “The Disabled Eagle.” He even attempted a comeback to flying in the late 1920s, but was denied the necessary permit. Forced to close his pharmacy, he embraced a new passion: automobiles. He became the only person in Hungary authorized to drive with one arm. Prodam Guido’s later years were quiet, living in Buda and selling lottery tickets. He passed away in 1948. The Prodam Guidó Plaque marks not only his aviation achievements but also his resilience in the face of adversity. His story is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the unwavering pursuit of dreams. His legacy lives on, etched in the history of Hungarian aviation and commemorated by the plaque before you.
