Was Gedung Rektorat I always this imposing? Its presence certainly commands attention. Here we stand before Gedung Rektorat I, the heart of Universitas Indonesia in Jakarta. Built between 1984 and 1987, this building isn’t just a structure, it’s a story etched in concrete and glass. Designed by Professor Gunawan, Gedung Rektorat I stands as a testament to his vision. Notice the four main pillars. They aren’t just supporting the roof, they echo the design of a candi, a traditional Javanese temple. These pillars ground the building in Indonesian heritage. Flanking the main structure are four pendopo-like buildings. These were intended as exhibition spaces or galleries, adding another layer to the Rektorat’s purpose. Government regulations at the time limited government buildings to eight floors. Gedung Rektorat I adheres to this restriction. Access to the building is through the semi-basement and ground floor. Each floor boasts a height of 4.2 meters, culminating in a total height of approximately 40 meters. The pointed roof isn’t just an aesthetic choice. It represents a “central list,” symbolizing focused and elongated analysis, like a sharp point directing thought. The centralized aspect of the design draws inspiration from the renowned kingdoms of Java. This central section houses the administration, a fitting hub for the university’s operations. The elongated sections, representing the faculties, extend outwards. Gedung Rektorat I’s design is a blend of intricate construction and captivating architecture. The complex framework is visible thanks to the extensive use of glass. Instead of traditional brick walls, glass panels serve as both windows and walls, maximizing natural light and ventilation. This design not only enhances the building’s aesthetic appeal but also reduces energy consumption. The division of space within the building is noteworthy. The lower two floors are unified under a single, continuous roof. The upper floors, however, have separate, tiered roofs, reminiscent of the joglo style common in Javanese architecture. These roofs, pyramidal in shape, have a unique feature. Their peaks are truncated, forming a flat, square top. Unifying these separate spaces is a central, pyramidal roof that rises above the others. This roof, unlike the lower ones, retains a sharp, triangular peak, giving the building a sense of height and grandeur. Below this central roof, a high glass wall displays the Universitas Indonesia logo. The logo, simple yet striking in white, stands out against the warm brown of the roofs. This brown hue softens the otherwise metropolitan feel of the glass and provides a grounding element. Gedung Rektorat I is more than an administrative center. It is a symbol of Universitas Indonesia’s commitment to education, heritage, and innovative design.
