Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? At Musholla Al-Anwar in Jakarta you will. This unassuming mosque stands as a silent testament to centuries of faith and resilience. Musholla Al-Anwar is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living museum reflecting the vibrant tapestry of Jakarta’s past.

Built in 1761 Musholla Al-Anwar initially known as Masjid Angke has deep roots in the city’s multicultural heritage. Its foundations were laid by Muslim converts from Batavia’s Chinese community. Nyonya Tan nee Oey a wealthy woman and Syaikh Liong Tan the building contractor were instrumental in its creation. This exemplifies the unique blend of cultures that shaped early Jakarta. The mosque’s location near a canal once known as Angke a name derived from Hokkien words for blood and carcass is a reminder of its past. The area was once a slaughterhouse.

The architecture of Musholla Al-Anwar is truly remarkable. It is the only mosque in Jakarta unchanged since its construction. The roof’s Javanese style is unmistakable with its two levels. However Balinese Chinese and even Dutch colonial influences are subtly woven into its design. Look closely at the window shutters they have distinct Balinese elements. The roof’s curving tips resemble Balinese punggel. The bracketing construction uses Chinese techniques. Even the lotus-shaped decorative elements hint at Buddhist influences. Musholla Al-Anwar showcases a fascinating synthesis of styles.

In 1858 the remains of Prince Syarif Hamid a Sultan from Pontianak were laid to rest in front of Musholla Al-Anwar. He had been captured by the Dutch. His grave remains a significant site visited by people from Pontianak many of whom settled in Angke. The cemetery near the mosque reflects this rich history. Many tombstones bear both Chinese and Arabic inscriptions showing the area’s diverse population.

Musholla Al-Anwar has been lovingly restored several times. The most recent restoration was in 2016. This small mosque measuring just 15 x 15 meters stands on 400 square meters of land. Yet its impact on Jakarta is immeasurable. This modest house of worship is a national treasure a protected cultural heritage.

Musholla Al-Anwar remains a vital part of the community. It is not just a historical landmark but a place of active worship. It is a constant reminder of Jakarta’s rich and complex past and its enduring spirit. As you stand before Musholla Al-Anwar take a moment to appreciate its beauty its history and the enduring faith it represents.
