Established in 1939 Greenford High School stands proudly before you. It wasn’t always the comprehensive school we see today. Initially it was a grammar school for boys and girls. It served a growing population on Ealing’s western edge. Middlesex County Council established the school to meet that need.
Greenford High School remained selective until 1974. The London Borough of Ealing reorganized its education system. The school transformed into a comprehensive one. It expanded to accommodate more students and the rising school-leaving age.
A significant change occurred in 1992. Greenford High School became a grant-maintained school. This was crucial. It saved the school’s sixth form from proposed post-16 education cuts. The school’s enrollment surged again the following year. Year 7 students returned after a long absence.
Today Greenford High School is a foundation school. It boasts over 1600 students. Its sixth form alone has over 550 students. A School Governing Body of 16 members oversees the school. This includes staff parents LEA representatives and community members.
The school has had influential leaders. Kate Griffin served as headteacher from 1991 to 2008. She was President of the Association of School and College Leaders. She also led the International Confederation of Principals. She was the first British head elected to lead this worldwide organization. Mathew Cramer succeeded her. Mia Pye now heads Greenford High School.
Greenford High School occupies modern buildings. They were completed in 2007. The school’s design is a mini-campus. Older buildings were demolished to make way for updated sports facilities. Nine buildings comprise the campus. Each building has a unique name. These buildings are named after famous figures like Aristotle Brunel Curie Dickens Escher Fitzgerald Gavaskar and Hawking. The dining hall is part of the original school building. A new I-block houses Year 7 and some Year 8 students. The sixth form is also located there.
Greenford High School reflects the diverse London community. Students come from many ethnic backgrounds including Bangladeshi Somali Indian Afro-Caribbean Pakistani English and Irish. The school embraces a rich tapestry of faiths including Sikhs Hindus Muslims and Christians.
