In 1873, a small, unassuming fountain was erected near Greyfriars Kirkyard. This wasn’t just any fountain. This was the Greyfriars Bobby Fountain, a tribute to a dog whose loyalty touched the hearts of Edinburgh. Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier, became a local legend in the 19th century. He spent 14 years guarding the grave of his owner, John Gray, a nightwatchman for the Edinburgh City Police. John Gray died and was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard. Bobby, heartbroken, refused to leave his master’s side. He remained by the grave, braving harsh weather and the passing of time.

The story of Greyfriars Bobby spread quickly. People admired the dog’s unwavering devotion. In 1867, even the Lord Provost, Sir William Chambers, was so moved that he paid for Bobby’s license and gave him a collar. This collar is now on display in the Museum of Edinburgh. Bobby’s vigil lasted for 14 years, ending with his death in 1872. A necropsy revealed that he died from cancer of the jaw. He was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, not far from John Gray. The people of Edinburgh wouldn’t forget him.

Lady Burdett-Coutts, an English philanthropist, was captivated by Bobby’s story. She commissioned the Greyfriars Bobby Fountain, a lasting memorial to the loyal dog. The fountain is topped with a life-size bronze statue of Bobby, created by sculptor William Brodie. Brodie was known for his statues of characters from Walter Scott’s novels, which adorn the Scott Monument. The Greyfriars Bobby Fountain is located at the southern end of George IV Bridge, close to the kirkyard where Bobby and his master rest. It’s a small monument but carries a powerful message of love, loyalty, and devotion. This monument stands as a reminder of a small dog’s big heart. Greyfriars Bobby’s story continues to resonate. It reminds us of the powerful bond between humans and animals.
