What secrets does Kő-hegy hold? Kő-hegy, or “Stone Hill,” rises above the heart of Budaörs. It whispers tales of ancient settlements and modern devotion. This hill has witnessed the ebb and flow of life for centuries. It’s a place where history and spirituality intertwine. Kő-hegy is more than just a geological formation. It is a landmark, a pilgrimage site, and a testament to human resilience.

Kő-hegy stands 235 meters tall. It dominates the Budaörs skyline. The city has grown around it, encroaching on its once wild slopes. Yet, pockets of its unique flora and fauna still cling to existence. Imagine the hilltop in spring, ablaze with the vibrant hues of pasque flowers and spring adonis. Picture the summer blooms of bellflowers, adding splashes of color against the dolomite rock. The pannon gyík, a unique lizard, might dart across your path. The air might buzz with the distinctive sound of the blue-winged grasshopper.

At the summit of Kő-hegy sits the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. This chapel has a remarkable story. In 1853, Ferenc Wendler, the chapel’s builder, survived a mining accident. He also experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary. Driven by gratitude and divine inspiration, he began construction in 1855. The chapel became a place of pilgrimage. Wendler even carved a cross-shaped cave into the hillside to live as a hermit, tending to the chapel.

Tragically, the chapel was damaged during World War II. It was left abandoned, its stones scavenged, and its statue of Mary nearly lost. However, the spirit of Kő-hegy endured. In 1997, the statue returned to Budaörs. Aided by the German town of Bretzfeld, the local community rallied to rebuild the chapel. It was re-consecrated in 2003, exactly 148 years after its original dedication. A new metal cross now graces the summit, illuminated at night, a beacon of hope and resilience. The chapel stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It represents the unwavering spirit of the Budaörs community.

Kő-hegy offers more than just spiritual solace. The dolomite rocks, shaped by ancient thermal springs, offer breathtaking panoramic views. Look north to the Csíki Hills and the heights of Budai-hegység. Below, the charming town of Budaörs unfolds, a tapestry of red roofs and historic wine-press houses. The panoramic view extends beyond Budaörs, to the distant cityscape of Budapest. Kő-hegy provides a unique vantage point. Unlike other hiking destinations, it is not surrounded by dense forest. The sights unfold directly before you. As you descend, explore the winding streets at the base of Kő-hegy. Discover the rich Swabian heritage woven into the fabric of this historic town. Kő-hegy is a place of reflection, inspiration, and breathtaking beauty. It is a must-see for anyone seeking a deeper connection to the history and spirit of Budaörs.
