Between 1884 and 1887, a young Aurobindo, then known as Aurobindo Ghose, resided at 49 St Stephen’s Avenue. He had come to England from India at the tender age of seven to receive an English education. During his time at this address, Aurobindo attended St Paul’s School in Hammersmith. While his formal education continued, it was here that he experienced a political awakening, recognizing the injustices of British rule in India. He found inspiration in historical figures of rebellion and developed a deep appreciation for Romantic and Elizabethan literature. These formative years in London significantly shaped Aurobindo’s worldview. He would later become a key figure in the Indian independence movement and a renowned spiritual leader, leaving an indelible mark on India’s history and spiritual thought.
