Across the vast expanse of the Upper Rhine Plain stretches a unique natural region, the Hardtebenen. The Hardtebenen cradles the city of Karlsruhe and its namesake, the Hardtwald forest, which extends north and south of the city center. The Hardtebenen are more than just flat land. This region is designated as number 223 in the Handbook of Natural Spatial Divisions of Germany, highlighting its distinct geographical identity. The Hardtebenen encompass a significant portion of the Karlsruhe district, reaching up to Bruchsal in the north. The Hardtebenen are characterized by sandy and gravelly areas formed by the Rhine’s lower terrace during the Quaternary period. Lowlands carve through these areas, and loamy lowlands appear at the edges of the fault lines. The Hardtebenen possess a hidden treasure: ecologically valuable inland dunes. These dunes are found only here in this region, adding to the area’s unique biodiversity. The soils of the Hardtebenen have low filter and buffer capacities. They are generally dry, except in the south and in areas where gravel has been extracted. The nutrient-poor and permeable soils of the gravel areas are mostly covered with pine forests, such as the Hardtwald. These areas also see intensive agricultural use. The Hardtebenen face environmental challenges. The acid inputs in these areas exceed the critical load agreed upon by the UN-ECE countries. Acidic, sandy substrates are typically found in the dune and shifting sand fields of the Hardtebenen. They also appear on the slopes of the sandstone Odenwald. The Hardtebenen hold significant groundwater reserves, primarily composed of calcium bicarbonate waters. The groundwater is only thinly covered by layers of medium to high loose rock. This abundance of groundwater has led to its intensive use. This usage is unfortunately coupled with the rather unnatural state of the river banks within the Hardtebenen. The Hardtebenen also face air quality issues due to the valley location. Air exchange is poor, leading to high ozone and nitrogen pollution. These pollutant levels often surpass the critical levels established by the UN-ECE countries. The Hardtebenen are rich in raw materials, particularly near-surface gravel deposits. These deposits are heavily exploited, especially in areas like Obere Haardt, Alb-Saalbach-Niederung, and Kraichbachniederung. Sand, gravel sand, quartz sand, and grit are also extracted. In the north, brick-making materials like clay, claystone, marlstone, loess, and loess loam are found. The Hardtebenen play a vital role in conservation efforts. The rivers and floodplain habitats are particularly important. The region supports endangered species in the Rhine floodplains. The intensive gravel and sand extraction has, however, created numerous quarry lakes. These lakes, while altering the landscape, also offer new habitats. The Hardtebenen, despite their challenges, remain a unique and important natural region in Germany.
