Ever wonder what secrets lie within those brick walls? This is the Alte Vogtei. It stands as a proud testament to Travemünde’s rich past.

For over 350 years, the Alte Vogtei was the seat of Lübeck’s city vogt. The vogt was responsible for law and order in this important port city. Imagine justice being dispensed within these very walls.

The Alte Vogtei dates back to 1551. A devastating fire swept through Travemünde in 1549. The original Vogtei from the 14th century was destroyed. This one was rebuilt in the Renaissance style we see today.

Notice the building’s two-part brick gable design. It exemplifies Renaissance architecture. The larger gable faces St. Lorenz Street and the church. The smaller gable marks the corner of the Vogteihof.

Take a closer look at the sandstone coat of arms above the Rokoko portal. It dates back to 1600. It is one of the many details that connect us to the past.

Step inside if you can. The interior boasts a remarkable Rokoko staircase. It features carved posts and an open balustrade from the 18th century. The main hall has a striking ceiling height of 4.60 meters. It is supported by original oak beams.

But the true gem lies hidden. During renovations in 2006, workers discovered well-preserved ceiling paintings. These are behind later additions. The 12-part Renaissance coffered ceiling is unique. It showcases portraits of Roman emperors and politicians. The Lübeck coat of arms is also featured. It shows a double-headed eagle and the year 1623.

Also, observe the exterior wall. You can spot high-water marks. They mark the flood levels of 1625 and the Baltic Sea storm surge of 1872.

From 1898, the Alte Vogtei served as a police station. Some called it “Schleswig-Holstein’s most beautiful police station”. Today, the Alte Vogtei is privately owned. It houses businesses.

The Alte Vogtei has witnessed centuries of change. It has served as a symbol of authority, resilience, and rebirth. It connects us to the history of Travemünde.
