Standing at the front gate of Northeastern Illinois University, a sense of history washes over you. This institution has been a beacon of knowledge in Chicago for almost two centuries, evolving through a series of names and transformations. It all started in 1867 as the Cook County Normal School, a place dedicated to training teachers. The school’s mission remained constant, but its name changed several times as it grew and expanded its programs. Becoming Chicago Normal School in 1896, then Chicago Teachers College in 1938, and finally Northeastern Illinois State College in 1966, the institution was steadily becoming more than just a teacher training school. It was in 1971 that the school earned its current name and achieved university status, marking the beginning of a new era for Northeastern Illinois University.
