“Best autumn hike in Kamikochi” it is called. Today, we stand at the foot of Karasawa Cirque. This valley is a testament to nature’s artistry.
Karasawa Cirque is a major glacial cirque in Japan. It resides in the Kamikochi region of Azumi in Matsumoto City. This is in Nagano Prefecture. The entire cirque and surrounding mountains are within Chūbu-Sangaku National Park. This park was designated in 1934.
The cirque lies beneath Mount Hotakadake’s peaks. This includes Mount Okuhatakadake. Other peaks circle this glacial valley. These are Mount Karasawa, Mount Kitahotakadake, and Maehotakadake. Key spots include Shirade Col and Seitengrat ridge.
Imagine the sheer scale. Karasawa Cirque stretches about 2,000 meters in diameter. The cirque floor stands 2,300 meters above sea level. There is an elevation difference of 900 meters. Melting snow feeds the Azusa River. It flows through the Kamikochi valley. Then, it joins the Sai River and the Shinano River. The Shinano River is Japan’s longest.
This area is so remote. Japan Post considers Karasawa a difficult-to-access area. It is impossible to mail items here from outside.
Karasawa Cirque serves as a hub for mountaineering. Many aim for Mount Hotakadake. In summer, the area fills with tents. Climbers often stay at Karasawa Hutte or Karasawa Hut. Even in summer, some snow remains. The cirque is famous for autumn leaves.
A popular hike to the cirque is a 30 km round trip over two days. The elevation gain is 800 meters. It starts at the Kamikochi Bus Terminal. Hikers pass Myojinkan, Tokusawa-en, and Yokoo. They cross Hontani Bridge and reach Karasawa Hütte. The trail is relatively flat until Yokoo. Then, it climbs steeply.
Experienced climbers might traverse into the cirque. For example, they go from Mount Yari to Mount Nakadake. Then they go to Mount Minamidake. Next is the Daikiretto gap to Mount Kitahotakadake. The Daikiretto gap route is technically challenging.
Geographer Tomoya Iozawa identified two glacier stages in Japan. One is the Yokoo Glacier. It dates back 60,000 years. The other is the Karasawa Glacier from 20,000 years ago.
There are two major mountain huts in the cirque. These are Karasawa Hutte and Hut of Karasawa.
