Can you believe that Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Salette stands on the site of former underground quarries? To reach solid rock, the builders had to anchor the structure with deep masonry. This unique church, built in 1965, reflects a modern design inspired by the Second Vatican Council. Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Salette sits tucked away between rue de Dantzig and rue de Cronstadt, hidden from immediate view. You’ll find the main entrance on rue de Cronstadt. Look for the striking double walnut doors carved by Jean-Marie Baumel. These doors depict Christ and the Virgin of La Salette with the two children who witnessed the apparition. This very portal earned Baumel the prestigious Puvis de Chavannes prize. The chapel replaced an earlier one built in 1858 by the Brethren of Saint Vincent de Paul. The congregation, founded in 1845, had established an orphanage here. The story goes that after three orphans were healed, they decided to dedicate a chapel to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. This earlier chapel was expanded in 1886 but met its demise in 1969. Today, as you stand inside Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Salette, take a moment to appreciate its circular architecture. This design ensures excellent visibility for all worshippers. Sixteen pillars support the vault, and your eyes are drawn upwards to the sixteen stained glass windows. Designed by Paul Martineau and Joseph Archepel and crafted by the Boutzen workshops, these windows are more than just decoration. They depict geometric patterns and their shifting colors symbolize hymns rising towards the heavens. Attached to the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Salette, you’ll find a sanctuary of the same name. It houses relics of Saint Curé d’Ars, Clement Myionnet, and Maurice Maignen. You can also find the tombs of two significant figures: Blessed Father Henri Planchat, the congregation’s first priest who was executed during the Paris Commune, and the revered Jean-Léon Le Prévost, founder of the Congregation of the Religious of St. Vincent de Paul. This congregation continues to serve the parish today.
