Ever wondered what lies beneath the seemingly ordinary streets of Elmhurst? The Elmhurst Quarry is more than just a hole in the ground. It’s a testament to history. It’s a story etched in stone.

The Elmhurst Quarry started its life in 1883. It was an 11-acre quarry. The Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Company used it to extract limestone. Builders used this stone for foundations and walls. They hand-cut the stone. The process created lots of stone chips. These were sold for road building. Demand for these chips soared. The company added crushers and screens to boost production. The Elmhurst Quarry’s stone ended up in Chicago and Northwestern Railroad roadbeds. It also built state highways and public buildings in DuPage County.

Initially stone extraction was largely manual. Then in 1914 things changed. The company installed conveying and mechanical handling equipment. This sped up the process considerably. By 1929 they had quarried 15 acres to a depth of 70 feet. Imagine the scale of that operation. The sheer volume of stone removed.

Later the company expanded. They started producing ready-mix concrete. Blasting limestone produced smaller stones and screenings. This led to the new concrete venture. The Elmhurst Quarry’s contribution to the region’s infrastructure is remarkable.

In 1992 the Elmhurst Quarry was sold to DuPage County. It was transformed. It became a massive stormwater management facility. It can hold 2.7 billion gallons of floodwater. The water is held at a depth of 200 feet. This incredible reservoir has saved countless homes from flood damage. It’s a modern marvel built on the foundations of a historic quarry.

Today the Elmhurst Quarry stands as a symbol of transformation. From a bustling stone quarry to a vital flood control system. It’s a story of adaptation and ingenuity. A legacy carved into the very landscape of Elmhurst. The Elmhurst Quarry’s history is deeply woven into the fabric of this community. A reminder that even seemingly ordinary places can hold extraordinary stories.
