Did Reverend Robert Fabius Butler know that meeting under that elm tree in 1864 would spark such a legacy? He, along with a group of Black missionaries, founded Mount Pisgah Baptist Church under that very tree. This was no ordinary act, especially considering the laws at the time. Slaves couldn’t congregate without a white man present, but Butler, a white circuit preacher, saw the importance of their faith. They named their church Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, drawing inspiration from Deuteronomy 34:1 where Moses glimpsed the Promised Land. Can you imagine their hope, their resilience, meeting under that tree, yearning for their own promised land of freedom? Mount Pisgah Baptist Church became a beacon for the Black community in Dallas County. It’s actually the oldest African American Baptist church in the county, a testament to the enduring faith of its congregation. The church has seen its share of moves over the years. From the elm tree, they progressed to a brush arbor. They eventually purchased land and built their first structure, a modest building reminiscent of a shotgun house. In 1945, a new church was erected on Preston Road, this time built with sturdy rocks from Jacksboro, Texas. This building earned the nickname “The Rock,” reflecting not just its construction but also the unwavering spirit of the church. Today, Mount Pisgah Baptist Church stands tall in Richardson, Texas. This church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and the pursuit of equality.
