In the heart of northwest Auckland, a dynamic urban landscape unfolds before you: Westgate. Westgate isn’t just a shopping center. It’s a testament to Auckland’s growth, a vibrant hub pulsating with life and commerce. Originally known as Massey North, Westgate’s transformation began in the late 1990s when the Waitakere City Council envisioned a new town center. They aimed to create a place where residents could access services and employment without needing to travel to central Auckland. Westgate today is a far cry from its past. The official name change to “Westgate” in 2013 marked a significant step in its evolution. The area became a priority for the Auckland Council, and the development of this regional town center has been dramatic. It’s now the heart of retail and commercial activity in northwest Auckland. Westgate boasts a modern shopping center, a library aptly named Te Manawa (meaning “the heart” in Māori), and a bustling town square, Te Pumanawa Square. This space is designed to be pedestrian-friendly, with areas for outdoor dining. The council’s focus extends beyond commercial development to encompass green spaces, creating a network of parks and walkways throughout Westgate. Westgate is also home to New Zealand’s first Costco Wholesale warehouse club, which opened in September 2022. The sheer scale of the shopping options in Westgate is impressive. The original Westgate Shopping Centre, established in 1998, boasts nearly 90 shops. The newer NorthWest Shopping Centre, opened in 2015, is even larger, with around 100 retailers. And let’s not forget Westgate Lifestyle, opened in 2017, offering another array of large format retail stores. While the growth has been remarkable, it hasn’t been without its challenges. Traffic congestion is a concern, but Auckland Transport is working on solutions. They are exploring options such as improved public transport and road expansions. Westgate’s story is a testament to Auckland’s forward-thinking vision.
