Picture this Yanghang Town in Shanghai’s Baoshan District. This isn’t just any town. It’s a place steeped in history a place where the echoes of the Song Dynasty still resonate. Yanghang Town is where we stand today. This area thrived as a bustling commercial center during the Southern Song Dynasty. Over 180 shops lined Yanghang Old Street. Imagine the vibrant energy the constant flow of people.
The local handicraft industry flourished particularly for paper umbrella makers. Their delicate creations shaded the streets of Yanghang for generations. For centuries Yanghang Old Street was a testament to resilience and craftsmanship. Then came the 1980s. An influx of people seeking affordable housing changed the town forever.
The once-picturesque streets became cramped. Narrow lanes presented serious safety hazards. Ambulances and fire trucks couldn’t navigate the maze-like neighborhoods. The wooden houses posed significant fire risks. Life in Yanghang became a precarious balancing act. Yet the spirit of Yanghang endured.
In June 2017 relocation began. Almost every resident agreed to move. They yearned for better living conditions a safer environment. For a 66-year-old resident surnamed Li born in Xijie the move was a dream come true. He had waited two decades for improved safety and living conditions.
Today Yanghang Town is undergoing a massive urban renewal project. The old jerry-built structures are being replaced. In their stead rise modern high-rises. This project will provide 830000 square meters of new residential space. 741 households will be accommodated in over 1300 modern apartments. Three kindergartens two wet markets and a community service center are also planned. Five roads will be expanded and renovated.
The construction started recently. Residents expect to move back around 2020. This ambitious project is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a commitment to improving the lives of Yanghang residents. It’s a symbol of progress and hope. The future Yanghang Town will preserve its rich history while offering a modern comfortable life to its residents. This is Yanghang Town a place transformed but not forgotten.
