What if these walls could talk? They would tell tales of refuge and community at the Linh-Son Buddhist Temple. This temple stands as a beacon of Vietnamese Buddhism in Austin. It is located on Duval Road.

Linh-Son Buddhist Temple isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub for cultural preservation. The temple’s story began in 1998. It grew from the needs of Austin’s expanding Vietnamese community. An earlier temple was founded in Leander in 1984. The Austin location provided a more accessible space for weekly gatherings.

The Linh-Son Buddhist Temple welcomes people from all backgrounds. While predominantly Vietnamese, it embraces Chinese, Thai and Cambodian visitors. You will also find Sri Lankans, Indians and Westerners here. Chanting services echo in Vietnamese creating an immersive experience.

The temple serves as a meeting place for the Linh-Son Buddhist Youth Association. This group works to maintain Vietnamese culture in America. Think of it as a cultural Boy/Girl Scouts. They organize cookouts and camping trips.

Venerable Thich Tri-Hue leads the temple. He travels between the Austin and Leander locations. He also visits Houston as needed. Thich Hue-Minh is the Vice-Abbot. He resides at the Austin temple. His journey to the U.S. is a story of its own. He survived a dangerous ocean voyage from Vietnam. Ordination in Houston marked a new chapter.

Major holidays bring the community together. At Linh-Son Buddhist Temple these celebrations include Tết Trung Thu. It is a mid-autumn moon festival. Vu Lan honors mothers akin to Mother’s Day. Tết Nguyên Đán marks the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. Buddha’s Birthday is also celebrated. The larger Leander temple hosts the biggest events due to its spacious facilities.

The Linh-Son Buddhist Temple provides more than religious services. It offers counseling and guidance. The resident monk is always available for consultation. The community supports the resident monk. A meditation course meets on the third Sunday of each month. Buddhist studies are facilitated by Thich Tri-Hue and Thich Hue-Minh. Classes in Vietnamese language, Buddhism and culture are offered every Sunday. The Linh-Son Buddhist Youth Association has six levels of study. Graduates often become teachers themselves.

Originally a private residence, the Austin Linh-Son Temple has transformed. It now includes a prayer hall and living quarters for the resident monk. A small garden adds to the serene atmosphere. A multipurpose room serves as a meeting space, classroom or dining area. The Austin Vietnamese community raised all the funds to purchase and convert the property.

Soon construction will begin on a large school behind the temple. This will facilitate larger classes in Vietnamese language, culture and Buddhist studies. Linh-Son Buddhist Temple is affiliated with the International Linh-Son Buddhist Association. Its headquarters is near Paris, France.

As you leave Linh-Son Buddhist Temple consider its impact. It is more than just a temple. It is a vibrant center for community and culture.
