Deep within the heart of Rejoso, Indonesia, lies Musholla Darul Ulum. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and resilience. Musholla Darul Ulum isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a beacon of hope, a symbol of unwavering dedication to education and community. Established in 1933, Musholla Darul Ulum consciously chose its name, echoing the prestigious Darul Ulum madrasa in Mecca. The founders, including Kiai Romli Tamim and Kiai Dahlan Cholil, envisioned more than just a namesake. They sought to create a unique educational haven. This haven was designed to mold resilient individuals, steadfast in their faith amidst the changing tides of time. At Musholla Darul Ulum, days began with the practicalities of life. Students toiled in the fields and engaged in trade, learning the value of hard work and sustenance. As night fell, they turned to prayer, seeking divine guidance. This balanced approach to life, nurturing both the physical and spiritual, shaped the very essence of Musholla Darul Ulum. The knowledge imparted here wasn’t confined to religious teachings. It extended to a broader spectrum of learning, preparing students for the complexities of the world. The division of labor among the leaders reflected this holistic approach. Kiai Romli Tamim guided the overall direction of the Musholla, sharing his wisdom on Sufism and the Qodiriyah Wannaqsyabandiyah order. Kiai Dahlan Cholil focused on Islamic law and Quranic studies, while Kiai Ma’soem Cholil oversaw the school’s organization and management. Musholla Darul Ulum also played a pivotal role during Indonesia’s struggle for independence. Located near the dividing line between freedom fighters and colonial forces, it became a hub of activity. Tragically, Ishomudin, son of Kiai Romli Tamim, lost his life in 1949, a stark reminder of the sacrifices made during this tumultuous period. Even Kiai Romli Tamim himself faced imprisonment, highlighting the risks they faced. The Musholla even served as a base for Hisbullah troops, further solidifying its role in the fight for freedom. The year 1938 marked the establishment of the first formal school at Musholla Darul Ulum, Madrasah Ibtidaiyyah Darul Ulum. This was followed by the creation of Madrasah Muallimin in 1949 for male students and a similar institution for female students in 1945. These schools flourished, reaching a student population of approximately 3,000. The legacy of Musholla Darul Ulum is interwoven with the lives of its alumni, many of whom became prominent figures in their communities. Some followed the path of Sufism, becoming spiritual guides. Others dedicated themselves to memorizing the Quran, serving as beacons of religious knowledge. The story of Musholla Darul Ulum culminates with the passing of its two key figures, Kiai Dahlan Cholil and Kiai Romli Tamim, in 1958. Their deaths marked the end of an era. Yet, their vision continues to inspire generations, shaping Musholla Darul Ulum into the vibrant center of faith and learning it remains today.
