Was Jacques Decour just a name on a square? He was more. He was Daniel Decourdemanche. Jacques Decour was his pseudonym. We are standing at Square Jacques Decour.

Decour was born in Paris in 1910. He became a writer and a French resistance fighter. He was also a communist. Decour was executed by the Germans. This happened at Fort Mont-Valérien in Suresnes.

Decour’s life was dedicated to fighting for free thought. He wanted French literature to continue. This was despite the Nazi occupation. He joined the French Communist Party. He became active in Tours. Decour believed in happiness and progress.

In 1937, Decour became a professor in Paris. He taught at the Lycée Rollin. Later, the school was renamed Lycée Jacques Decour. It honored his memory. Decour also became editor of the magazine Commune.

During the war, Decour resisted through his writing. He helped create the journal L’Université Libre. Later, he founded La Pensée Libre. These publications were important. They were underground publications during the occupation.

In 1941, Decour led the National Committee of Writers. The committee planned a new magazine. It was called Les Lettres Françaises. He never saw its publication. The French police arrested Decour in 1942. He was then handed over to the Germans.

Before his execution, Decour wrote a moving letter to his family. He expressed his faith in the youth. He believed his sacrifice would not be in vain. He wrote about seeing himself as a leaf falling from a tree. This would create soil. The quality of the soil would depend on the leaves. He meant the French youth.

Jacques Decour was executed on May 30, 1942. He was only 32 years old. His last thoughts were for his students. He referenced a scene from Goethe’s Egmont.

Many places honor Jacques Decour’s name today. Eighteen cities in France and two in Germany commemorate him. These include schools and streets. There is also a forest.

Square Jacques Decour is one of these places. It keeps his memory alive. He is also cited at the Panthéon in Paris. This is on a plaque honoring writers who died for France. Decour’s story shows his dedication. He stood for freedom of thought and resistance. Jacques Decour’s legacy lives on. It inspires us to fight for what we believe in.
