Hidden amongst the rolling hills and lush greenery, the Château de Janvry beckons. This isn’t just a château. It’s a time capsule. It whispers tales of centuries past, from the era of Louis XIII to the tumultuous years of World War II. The Château de Janvry was constructed between 1600 and 1650. It showcases the distinctive architectural style of Louis XIII. The “U” shaped structure embraces a courtyard, a silent witness to history unfolding.

The Château de Janvry has been passed down through generations of the Reille family, primarily through the women. Each inheritance brought a new family name to the estate. This tradition, however, couldn’t protect the château’s history from the ravages of the French Revolution. In 1789, the château was robbed. Precious documents detailing the estate’s history vanished.

The echoes of the French Revolution weren’t the only ones to reverberate through the château walls. During World War II, with the Reille family away, the château became a temporary home for German, English, and French troops. Local villagers witnessed the disrespect shown by some French soldiers, who tore up floorboards to fuel the grand fireplace. Today, you can still see traces of these replacements. Upstairs, in a bedroom of the northwest tower, inscriptions left by French soldiers remain as a stark reminder of their wartime presence.

When Baron Jean Reille returned after the war, the Château de Janvry was a shadow of its former self. Nettles grew inside, a testament to its abandonment. With his wife Liliane, he embarked on a mission of restoration. A new roof, modern plumbing, and electricity breathed life back into the château. His son, Baron Ghislain Reille, continued this labor of love in the 1980s. Today, the Château de Janvry stands as a testament to their dedication. It blends modern comforts with the timeless charm of a 17th-century masterpiece.

The château grounds hold their own stories. A long poplar-lined alley leads to the Cour d’Honneur. This grand courtyard, covered in white gravel, offers a breathtaking view of the main building. The dissymmetry of the Louis XIII style is evident. Four windows grace the left side of the main entrance, while three adorn the right. The east side, facing the park, has five windows to the right of the entrance and four to the left. Beyond the main building, a small courtyard reveals the remnants of the estate’s agricultural past. Barns and stables, marked by time, still bear the names of cows once housed there. The attics, with their soaring ceilings and oak beams, once stored grains. Hidden within the south-western tower are four jail cells, untouched by renovation, a chilling reminder of another era.

The Château de Janvry is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a story etched in stone and wood, a testament to resilience and the enduring power of history.
