“What could a Greek temple be doing here in Paris?” you might wonder. Yet, here stands the beautiful Sainte-Marie des Batignolles. This is not just another church. It is a unique landmark with a rich history.
Sainte-Marie des Batignolles began as a simple wooden chapel. This was between 1826 and 1829. The architect Jacques Molinos oversaw its construction. Donations from Charles X and the Duchess of Angoulême helped fund it. In 1830, the church took the name Sainte-Marie des Batignolles. This happened when the new commune of Batignolles-Monceau was created.
As the population grew, the church needed more space. Despite an earlier expansion in 1834, it was still too small. So, in 1839, architect Paul-Eugène Lequeux added two side chapels. In particular, Denys Affre, the archbishop, dedicated the altars to the Virgin Mary and Saint Vincent de Paul.
Legend says that a worker found a statuette of the Virgin Mary. However, the dedication to Marie de Nazareth was likely at the Duchess of Angoulême’s request. During the Commune de Paris in 1871, women held meetings here. They demanded equality with men. The church was listed as a historical monument in 1975.
Notice the church’s neoclassical style. It resembles a Greek temple. Four columns support the triangular pediment. Sainte-Marie des Batignolles is unusual because it lacks a bell tower. However, it does have a bell named Etiennette in a small campanile. This was built in 1857 after plans for two bell towers fell through.
Inside Sainte-Marie des Batignolles, the decor is simple. The vaulted ceiling is painted with coffers. The choir is decorated in Rococo and Neo-Gothic styles. The grand organ dates back to 1923. It underwent restorations in 1947 and 1994.
