Have you ever walked through a park that was once a miniature Dartmoor? Roundwood Park, nestled in the heart of Willesden, London, has a unique history that begins with a barren hill named Knowles Hill. In the late 19th century, the land was transformed by a visionary architect, Oliver Claude Robson, who had a remarkable vision for the future of the park. Robson was the Surveyor for the Willesden Local Board and, later, for the Willesden Urban District Council. He was passionate about creating green spaces for the people of London.

He saw potential in the bleak landscape of Knowles Hill, a landscape that, as Mr. Pinkham, Chairman of the Parks Committee, described, resembled a miniature Dartmoor, a place where only a few solitary trees stood. Robson, however, saw beyond the present and envisioned something more beautiful. He worked tirelessly to create a park that would be a haven for the community, a space for leisure and relaxation.

One of the first things Robson did was to install five miles of drainage, which turned the desolate area into a flourishing green space. He then planted over 14,500 trees and shrubs; the park burst into life, becoming a veritable Eden.

When the park opened to the public on May 11th, 1895, the transformation was complete. The people of Willesden now had their own green oasis, a testament to Robson’s vision and dedication. Roundwood Park became a place for families to enjoy the beauty of nature, a space where children could play, and adults could find peace and tranquility. It was a true testament to Robson’s architectural genius, transforming a once barren landscape into a vibrant and welcoming park that continues to delight Londoners today.
