Can a church building whisper secrets of history? Here at Reformation Lutheran Church in Roseland, Chicago, the walls seem to hum with untold stories. Reformation Lutheran Church stands as a silent testament to the passage of time, a landmark etched into the fabric of this community. Designed in 1888 by the renowned Pullman architect, Solon S. Beman, the church has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in Roseland for over a century. Reformation Lutheran Church wasn’t always located here. It originally stood at 113th Street and Calumet Avenue, in what is now Palmer Park. The congregation relocated to this spot on South Forest Avenue in 1904. This church building, once vibrant with the hymns of a thriving Black congregation, holds a unique piece of presidential history. It housed Barack Obama’s South Side office during his time as a community organizer. Imagine the conversations, the strategies, the dreams of change that took root within these very walls. Sadly, in 2018, disaster struck. A water boiler malfunctioned, flooding the basement and forcing the closure of Reformation Lutheran Church. It has remained vacant ever since, vulnerable to the elements and the slow decay of time. Stolen stained glass windows, water damage, structural issues, and mold now plague this historic structure. But the story doesn’t end there. Despite its current state, a dedicated group of community members, preservationists, and former congregation members are rallying to save Reformation Lutheran Church. They are pushing for landmark designation, hoping to secure its future and prevent its demolition. This fight isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about preserving a tangible link to the past, a testament to the rich history of Roseland. It’s about honoring the legacy of Solon S. Beman, the influence of George Pullman, and the contributions of the Swedish-American community who once called this church home. It’s about remembering the vibrant Black congregation who filled these pews and the future president who worked within these walls. The future of Reformation Lutheran Church hangs in the balance. Will it succumb to the ravages of time, or will it be resurrected as a symbol of community resilience and historical significance? The answer remains unwritten, a new chapter waiting to be added to the church’s long and storied history.
