Foners whispers tales of expansion and transformation. This Palma neighborhood sprung to life as part of the city’s grand expansion beyond its ancient walls. Envisioned in the 1901 Plan Calvet, Foners, nestled in Palma de Mallorca, was designed with a radial street layout, a unique contrast to Barcelona’s uniform grid. Foners isn’t just a neighborhood; it’s a story etched in streets and buildings. The main thoroughfares, like the impressive 40-meter Avenida Gabriel Alomar i Villalonga and the 30-meter Manacor, showcase the ambition of the original plan. Secondary streets, like Foners street itself, the starting point of the old Lluchmayor road, and Ricardo Ortega, Perez Galdós, and Joan Maragall, branch out like arteries, connecting the heart of Foners to the city. The plan even envisioned plazas at the intersection of these main arteries, breathing life and community into the neighborhood’s design. Originally, Foners was intended for single-family homes, one or two stories high, with patios, small gardens, or even animal pens in the back. This vision of a tranquil residential area is a far cry from what Foners would become. Urbanization was a slow burn. By 1920, even with streets laid out, only a small area near the avenues, along Manacor and Ricardo Ortega streets, and a scattering of houses had been built. Foners wasn’t meant to stay sleepy. In 1913, a small parish, Sa Misseta, was built on Ricardo Ortega Street, a precursor to the current neoclassical Santíssima Trinitat church, erected in 1958. The Alexandre Rosselló school followed in 1931. The hum of industry briefly echoed through Foners with the construction of several industrial buildings. These bustling hubs thrived until the 1970s, eventually giving way to the Son Castelló industrial estate. The face of Foners shifted dramatically with Gabriel Alomar Esteve’s 1940 urban plan. This plan opened the door for multi-family dwellings, forever changing the neighborhood’s landscape. The first publicly promoted building was inaugurated in 1948, signaling a new era for Foners. The economic boom of the 1960s and 70s, coupled with immigration, spurred rapid urbanization. Apartment buildings sprang up, creating the hybrid architectural style we see today. Modern Foners is home to government buildings for the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, and Territory, alongside the headquarters of Telefónica and ONCE. The buses of the Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Palma de Mallorca (EMT) weave through its streets, connecting Foners to the pulse of Palma. Lines 7, 12, 14, 18, 24, 27, 32, and 39 crisscross the neighborhood, a testament to its integration into the vibrant tapestry of the city. Foners today is more than just a neighborhood; it’s a testament to Palma’s evolution. It’s a place where the echoes of quiet, single-family homes mingle with the rhythm of modern urban life, a vibrant blend of past and present.
