What would possess a congregation to move their church southward? We are standing before the Ward Memorial United Methodist Church Plaque. It commemorates a church with a fascinating history closely tied to the growth of Austin. The story begins in 1885. Reverend Josiah Whipple established a Methodist mission in east Austin’s tenth ward. This fledgling community, filled with faith and a pioneering spirit, erected their first sanctuary on First Street in 1888, calling it the First Street Methodist Church. Time marched on, and in 1909, they chose to honor Seth Ward, a Texan Methodist bishop who had recently passed away. They renamed their spiritual home “Ward Memorial”. As Austin’s boundaries expanded southward, so did the lives of many Ward Memorial members. Driven by their commitment to serving the community, the church purchased land at this site in 1959. A brand-new building, a beacon of faith and community, was completed the following year. The Ward Memorial United Methodist Church Plaque stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community that built, moved, and rebuilt this church. Their dedication to serving their ever-changing neighborhood is a legacy worth remembering.
