A haven of peace amid London’s vibrant energy. That’s St George’s Church Campden Hill. This beautiful place of worship on Campden Hill has stood for over 150 years. Built by John Bennett a local builder his son George became its first vicar in 1864. The church’s consecration marked the beginning of its rich history.

St George’s Church Campden Hill wasn’t just erected. It was meticulously designed by Enoch Bassett Keeling. A master of the Eclectic Gothic style. The architect blended various mediaeval shapes designs and colours. This created a dazzling interior for early congregations. Sadly much of the original decoration has been lost over time. However extensive refurbishment has restored some of its Victorian grandeur. The church now boasts a welcoming new entrance even a counter for light refreshments.

Imagine the vibrant colours. Vivid patterns of polychrome brick red blue black and yellow adorned the interior walls. Intricate cast iron columns supported the arches. The light streaming through stained glass windows must have been breathtaking. The original design featured a richly sculptured reredos behind the altar. Now a gentle ramp provides access for all.

This refurbishment wasn’t just about aesthetics. It ensured St George’s Church Campden Hill would continue serving the community. A new community space offers meeting places for local groups. It truly has become a resource for Campden Hill. The restoration involved painstaking work. The nave’s refurbishment completed in 1995 revealed the original cast iron pillars. They were painted terra cotta.

Cakes and biscuits shaped like St George and the St George Cross were served. The church continues to serve God and the community. It remains a place of welcome hospitality and compassionate love.
