Why does this lighthouse stand here so proudly? Cape Schanck Lighthouse is not just a tower. It is a sentinel watching over the treacherous Bass Strait.

Cape Schanck Lighthouse was erected in 1859. It stands as Victoria’s second coastal lighthouse. This beacon marks the southernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula.

Imagine the scene in 1859. Limestone blocks were carefully placed to form the 21-metre tower. This lighthouse was the first in Australia with stone stairs. Its light sits 100 metres above sea level. The original light characteristic is the Morse code letter “N”. This is a long signal followed by a flash.

The powerful lantern emits one million candelas. Its first-order Fresnel lens was installed in 1915. This allows the light to reach 26 nautical miles or 48 kilometres. The light is white to the south and west. It turns red to the east to guide ships safely.

Cape Schanck Lighthouse is part of a triangle of Bass Strait lights. Cape Otway and Cape Wickham complete the formation. Together they ensure safe passage for vessels navigating these waters.

The lighthouse faced degradation until the 1970s. It was then that restoration efforts began. The facility has been attracting tourists since then.

Step inside the old assistant’s quarters. It has been transformed into a museum. Here you can explore maritime history. Discover stories of shipwrecks and the lives of lighthouse keepers.

Consider the keepers and their families. They lived in relative isolation. They maintained the light through storms and calm seas. Their dedication saved countless lives.

Notice the unusual stone stairway inside. Most lighthouses used wrought iron stairs. Cape Schanck’s stone steps are unique.

The original clockwork mechanism is still here. It is a testament to the ingenuity of the 19th century. An electric motor now turns the light.

Feel the sea breeze on your face. Look out from the balcony. This is the same view enjoyed by generations of lighthouse keepers. They watched for ships in distress and ensured the safety of those at sea.

Cape Schanck Lighthouse stands as a symbol of safety and guidance. Its light continues to shine brightly. It bridges the past and present. It protects those who navigate the waters of Bass Strait.
