Imagine stumbling upon a stone slab in Bonn. This isn’t just any stone slab. It’s a fragment of Bonn’s distant past. This is the Steinplattengrab.

Bonn, a city brimming with history, began as a small Germanic settlement around 30 BC. The Romans established a military settlement here between 13 BC and 9 BC. They called it Bonna.

The Steinplattengrab whispers tales from the Frankish era between the 6th and 9th centuries. Imagine Frankish warriors and families living and dying here. This archaeological site offers a glimpse into their lives.

Bonn transformed over centuries. In 1244, it gained a defensive wall. It became home to the court of the prince-elector of Cologne. The city resisted Luther’s Reformation. It became the official capital for the Electorate of Cologne in 1597.

While the Thirty Years’ War ravaged other cities, Bonn remained mostly intact. However, the Nine Years’ War in 1689 brought destruction. Joseph Clemens von Bayern envisioned a grand baroque residence here. Clemens August built the Electoral Palace and the Altes Rathaus.

The Steinplattengrab predates these grand constructions. It speaks of simpler times. Max Franz von Habsburg ushered in the Age of Enlightenment. Ludwig van Beethoven gave early performances in Bonn.

French rule arrived in 1794. The university closed. The church lost power. Prussia gained control in 1815. Karl Heinrich Marx studied here.

Bonn endured occupation after World War One. Allied bombing devastated the city center during World War Two. In 1949, Bonn became the capital of West Germany.

After German unification in 1990, Bonn lost its capital status. But it remains the Bundesstadt, a federal city. The Steinplattengrab reminds us that Bonn’s story is much older than its time as a capital.

Today, Bonn is known for Beethoven. He was born here in 1770. The city celebrates his legacy. Bonn is also a hub for international organizations.

The Rhine River flows through Bonn. The cherry blossom festival enchants each spring. The Poppelsdorf Palace is a must-see. The Rhineland Nature Park offers outdoor adventures.

The Steinplattengrab may seem like a simple stone slab. It is a powerful reminder of Bonn’s long and layered history. It connects us to the Frankish people who once called this place home. Their stories rest beneath our feet.
