How about a church born from a desire for local Christian community? Banstead United Reformed Church has a unique story. It began with a small group of Christians. They felt Banstead needed its own Reformed Church.
In 1940 twenty-four people met for a service. This took place in the school hall. The Congregational Church in Sutton offered support. Other churches in the area also helped. In 1946 Banstead Congregational Church was formally created. Fifty-two founder members signed a Covenant. This Covenant outlined their aims and commitment. You can see a copy of this Covenant on the noticeboard. It is in the vestibule.
The first buildings opened in 1951. These buildings form the left side. Look at them from the front. A new sanctuary was added in 1957. A large meeting room followed in 1962. It is called the Fellowship Room. The sanctuary and vestibule were extended and enhanced in 2000. These building additions reflect the church’s growth. Church attendance and membership increased over time. Currently the church has one hundred and seven members. On average forty people attend Sunday morning services. This includes men women and children.
People come from various backgrounds. They are of mixed ages. All are at different stages of their faith journey. The church seeks God’s inspiration. It is open to challenges. Members support each other and the community. They share the love of God. They draw new families and individuals into church life. The church’s covenant includes important statements.
Banstead United Reformed Church stands on Woodmansterne Lane. It is on the corner of Fiddicroft Avenue. There is a car park next to the church. In the summer you can park on the grass. Two disabled car parking spaces are available. Banstead United Reformed Church has grown. It started from humble beginnings. It continues to serve its community today.
