The inscription on the Stèle à la mémoire de Jean Lanot et Jean Roger Allviger Cross speaks of their sacrifice. It reads, “Here, on February 23, 1944, Jean Lanot, 22 years old, and Jean Roger Allviger, 25 years old, engaged in the FFI, were shot while carrying out a mission.” In 1940, Roger Allviger joined a youth construction project in the free zone of France. In 1941 he went back to his home in Levallois-Perret. His wife recalled that he worked as a laborer in Rouen, Marseille, and Brest during the war. By the end of 1943 he returned to Paris and worked as a driver for a Citroën bus company. He joined the FFI in the fourteenth arrondissement on February 19, 1944. He was sent on a mission to Versailles on February 23. In the town of Guyancourt, his Citroën was stopped by a German patrol. A grenade was found under one of the seats. Two of the occupants were arrested, the other managed to escape. The two that were arrested, Roger Allviger and Jean Lanot, were taken into the woods and summarily executed. It is here at the Stèle à la mémoire de Jean Lanot et Jean Roger Allviger Cross, at the very site of their murders, that their sacrifice is remembered. Their names forever etched on the stone.
