You might not know this, but right here in Glenwood, we are standing on the edge of a historical story. The village of Glenwood, a small slice of life nestled in the heart of Illinois, boasts a unique piece of history. Glenwood is a place where history is alive and palpable. The story of Glenwood goes back to the mid-1840s. The area was then called Hickory Bend. It was not until 1871 that Glenwood was surveyed along the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad. The railroad drew in farmers who used Glenwood as a depot. They also attracted those who found work maintaining the railway at nearby switch tracks, a round table, and coal yards. Glenwood became a small village in 1903 thanks to about 500 people who wanted to formally establish the village. For 57 years Glenwood remained a cozy small village with only modest expansion. But then came the ’60s and ’70s. Boom! Between those years, nearly 3,000 new homes were built. The population of Glenwood grew rapidly until it peaked at 10,538 in 1980. This growth also fostered a growing racial diversity. In 1970 the village’s residents were almost exclusively white. But then, in the ’80s, middle- and upper-middle-class black people moved to the southern suburbs. The village was changed forever. Today Glenwood is a testament to the passage of time and the evolving tapestry of this community. The story of Glenwood, with its vibrant history and growing cultural richness, is a tale worth experiencing.
