Who was Rocío Vanesa Muro? Here at this memorial, we remember a young life tragically cut short. Rocío Vanesa Muro, an eleven-year-old girl from the San Juan de Dios neighborhood, vanished on her way home from school. Rocío was walking with a friend on November 9th when a chilling encounter changed everything. A man in an orange Peugeot stopped near them. Rocío spoke to him, then told her friend, “Bye, I’m going with my uncle.” She climbed into the car, which drove off towards Route 7. This memorial stands as a testament to Rocío, forever marking the spot where the search for her ended. The inscription, a message of gratitude from the Muro family, acknowledges the tireless efforts of the Luján police department in the early days of Rocío’s disappearance. It names Comisario Julio García and his team. The investigation into Rocío’s disappearance immediately focused on those closest to her. It was clear she knew her abductor. Four days later, the home of Pedro Cecilio Orozco was searched. He was the former partner of Rocío’s mother’s sister. Though their relationship had ended, he still maintained contact with the family. Orozco fled when the police arrived, evading capture despite Rocío’s mother, Miriam de Muro, being present and identifying him. For almost three months, the search for Orozco continued. He was eventually apprehended in Suipacha, working in a field. He confessed to the crime, admitting his intention to assault Rocío, but offered few other details. He had a prior record for indecent assault. Orozco led the police to Rocío’s remains near Route 7. Her body, along with her school uniform and supplies, was found in a wooded area near a dirt road leading to Las Casuarinas. This memorial, dedicated to Rocío Vanesa Muro, serves as a somber reminder of a life lost too soon, and a community forever marked by this tragic event.
