From a grammar school for printers’ sons to a bustling community hub, Stationers Park has seen quite a transformation. Stationers Park isn’t just a green space. It’s a living testament to the evolving heart of London. Originally, this very spot housed the Stationers’ Company’s School. Founded in 1861 by the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers, the school catered to the sons of those in the printing, publishing, and newspaper trades. Imagine young lads, their heads full of ink and newsprint, roaming these grounds. In 1891, the school moved to this location in Hornsey. It boasted grand Gothic-style buildings, a testament to the importance of the printing profession. The school expanded in 1933 with a new assembly hall, gymnasium, and workshops. It thrived as a grammar school and even became a comprehensive school in 1967. Sadly, the school closed its doors in 1983. The buildings were demolished, making way for the Stationers Park we know today. Some of the land was used for social housing. But the spirit of community and learning lives on in this vibrant park. Today, Stationers Park is a Green Flag Award winner, a testament to its upkeep and community involvement. It’s a place where families picnic, children play, and athletes compete on the basketball and tennis courts. The Friends of Stationers Park organize events, keeping the park’s heart beating strong. Stationers Park is more than just a park. It’s a place where history whispers beneath the laughter of children and the rustle of leaves. It’s a reminder that even as times change, the spirit of community endures.
