Picture the majestic Gothic architecture of St Ambrose Catholic Church. It stands proudly on East 47th Street in Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood. This isn’t just any church. St Ambrose holds a rich history woven into the fabric of the city.

Established in 1904 the parish initially served a small Irish congregation. Masses were held in a modest corner store. Father William M Foley led this burgeoning community. Their faith grew. Soon a temporary church was built. Ambition soared.

In 1906 a permanent structure was planned. Its foundation was laid in 1907. The magnificent Gothic church designed by Zachary Taylor Davis wasn’t completed until 1926. This coincided with the Eucharistic Congress a significant event in Catholic history. The church’s construction involved many wealthy Irish families. Their generosity fueled the project. They lived in grand mansions nearby. The 1920s were indeed the parish’s golden age.

In 1929 renowned artist John Mallin was commissioned to decorate the church. The intricate work included plaster detailing painting and gold leaf accents. A stunning mural of Our Lord in Heaven adorned the sanctuary. This meticulous work cost $9700. Additional expenses included gilding the Stations of the Cross. The total cost was over $10000. A significant sum for that era.

The church’s story continues. Urban renewal in the 1950s changed the neighborhood. Many families moved. The church adapted. It remained a vital part of the community. While the Mallin decorations are gone today St Ambrose Catholic Church still stands tall. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Chicago. It’s a place of worship. A beacon of hope. A living legacy in the heart of Kenwood.
