Venustiano Carranza a powerful landowner and politician. He rose to prominence during the tumultuous Mexican Revolution. He served as President of Mexico from 1917 until his assassination in 1920. Carranza’s journey began in Cuatro Ciénegas Coahuila. Born into a wealthy family he received an excellent education in Saltillo and Mexico City. His political career started early. He served as a senator during the Porfiriato under Porfirio Díaz. However he later opposed Díaz supporting Francisco Madero’s challenge.
When Madero was murdered in 1913 Carranza issued the Plan of Guadalupe. This document outlined his strategy to overthrow Victoriano Huerta Madero’s usurper. He organized the Constitutionalist Army a professional force that ultimately defeated Huerta.
The victory did not bring peace. Carranza’s rivals Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata challenged his authority. These conflicts tested his leadership.
