Lost in the whispers of Istanbul’s history stands the Incili Kiosk a jewel nestled within the Topkapi Palace.

The Incili Kiosk wasn’t just any structure. It held a significant place in the heart of the Ottoman Empire. Built during the reign of Sultan Murad III between 1588 and 1591 it was a gift from Grand Vizier Koca Sinan Pasha. Mimar Davud Aga the architect designed this masterpiece.

It was situated on the Marmara Sea walls between the Ahirkapi and Degirmenkapi gates. Its name Incili Kiosk meaning Pearl Kiosk comes from the pearl-shaped ornaments that adorned its dome. This kiosk was part of a series of coastal kiosks crucial to the Topkapi Palace complex. It served as a place where the Sultan could watch ceremonies and sporting events. The kiosk was also known as the Sinan Pasha Kiosk or the Cayir Kiosk.

Sadly a fire in 1863 destroyed the wooden parts of the Incili Kiosk. Then the construction of the Rumeli railway line sealed its fate. Sultan Abdülaziz allowed the railway to run right by the palace grounds destroying many coastal buildings. The Incili Kiosk was lost to history. Only its stone base remains a testament to its grandeur.

A fascinating tale surrounds the Incili Kiosk and Sultan Murad III’s final visit. The Sultan was ill. While he sat in the kiosk a celebratory cannon fire from the returning Ottoman fleet from Alexandria shook the structure. The Sultan interpreted this as an omen. He believed it signaled his last visit to the kiosk. A few days later he passed away. The Incili Kiosk remained a silent witness to this poignant event.

Even though the Incili Kiosk is gone its legacy lives on in stories and memories. It reminds us of a vibrant era in Istanbul’s rich history a period of power and splendor. A time when the Ottoman Empire reached its heights. Today all that is left is its base. Yet it speaks volumes. It whispers tales of sultans grand viziers and a bygone era. The Incili Kiosk a vanished beauty that forever captures our imagination.
