Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Wallington Baptist Church is its humble beginning. Wallington Baptist Church has a rich history. It all began in 1876. Let’s step back in time and uncover the story of this vibrant church.

The seeds of Wallington Baptist Church were sown through open-air preaching. Mr. Brewood and Mr. May of the Metropolitan Tabernacle led these services. Early meetings took place at 2 Camden Road. Later, they moved to the Public Hall. The rent was £60 a year. Mr. May became the first pastor.

Interestingly, Charles Spurgeon and his brother James supported the church. Their gratitude is recorded in the first minute book. In 1878, Mr. May resigned. Rev. T. W. Scamell, a student pastor from the Pastors’ College, took his place in 1879. Around the same time, a building fund was established.

A significant chapter began in 1880. Rev. James E. Jasper became the pastor. He served for 44 years until his death in 1924. The Wallington Baptist Church building officially opened on March 21, 1888. Rev. C. H. Spurgeon did the honors.

Wallington Baptist Church has had several pastors throughout its history. Following Rev. Jasper were Rev. A. T. Greenwood, Rev. Leonard Plested, and Rev. Stanley J. Gray. Rev. David B. Hudson followed them. Rev. Nigel Jones took over in 1983.

The church celebrated its 145th anniversary in 2021. A film by Chris Poole, the resident poet, was shown during the anniversary service.

Wallington Baptist Church is a congregational-led church. It is a friendly and caring family. Today, Wallington Baptist Church continues to thrive. It welcomes people from all over the UK and the world. The church seeks to know God more. It also aims to make Him known to others.

Minute books and membership records offer a glimpse into Wallington Baptist Church’s past. These records span from 1876 to 1983. They document the church’s activities. These include Sunday school and other important events. These historical documents are held at the London Borough of Sutton Archives.
