Picture a haven of tranquility nestled in East London. This is Abbey Gardens a unique community garden. It’s built on the site of a 12th-century abbey. Imagine the history that lies beneath your feet.

Abbey Gardens is more than just a pretty place. It’s a living testament to community spirit and resilience. The gardens are protected by Historic England. This is due to the medieval monastic and Victorian ruins. The community works together tending the gardens. They use it as a space to pause reflect and create. They’re building a beautiful healthy and sustainable garden. Everyone benefits from this community effort.

Did you know that Abbey Gardens wasn’t always a garden? It was once a row of cottages. Beneath the soil are the remains of Stratford Langthorne Abbey’s gatehouse. It’s a hidden piece of London’s history. Two artists Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie created the garden in 2008. They transformed this neglected space into a vibrant community hub.

The gardens are open every day from dawn till dusk. You can join in gardening workshops. These are held weekly on Sundays between April and October. Gardening clubs meet every Sunday too. You can enjoy a free herbal tea while you garden. All are welcome from beginners to experts. There are no age restrictions either.

Abbey Gardens offers much more than gardening. It’s a place for events. Seasonal events range from Easter celebrations to harvest festivals. They host educational workshops too. These are focused on nature and delivered by the local community. The gardens are truly a vibrant and dynamic part of East London. They are a testament to what can be achieved when people work together.

So as you wander through Abbey Gardens take a moment to appreciate the blend of history and community. The rich past and the vibrant present intertwine beautifully. What will your harvest be in this unique and thriving space?
