Have you ever heard of Gus Elen? He was a music hall comedian, a true Cockney, and a legend of the stage. Right here, on 3 Thurleigh Avenue in Balham, he lived for a part of his life. He was a man of many talents, before he became a comedian, he worked as a barman, and then later as an assistant at a draper’s shop. Gus even packed eggs for the Co-op, before he decided to dedicate his life to making people laugh. He first appeared on stage in 1891, singing, and telling jokes about the everyday life of a Cockney. He performed songs with names like “Arf a Pint of Ale”, “It’s a Great Big Shame”, and “Down the Road”. His songs were a reflection of his life, his background, and the streets of London. Gus became loved by the people for his humor, his unique voice, and his personality. He became such a popular figure. The Greater London Council decided to erect a blue plaque on his former home in 1984, a permanent reminder of the impact he had on the world. It is a fitting tribute to a man who brought joy and laughter to so many.
