You see it standing there, a simple stone monument, a silent witness to a tragedy in Bremen. It commemorates the victims of Lufthansa Flight 005. Almost 60 years ago it crashed on a field near Bremen Airport. On board were athletes from the Italian national swimming team, with their coach, and an Italian reporter. The accident happened on a foggy day, the pilot mistakenly aborted the landing and, in a last, desperate attempt to gain altitude, the Convair aircraft crashed. The stone marks the spot where all 46 passengers and crew members lost their lives. The monument reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of remembering those who have passed away. It’s a sad reminder of the dangers of flying and a testament to the impact of this tragic crash, a reminder that the sky is not always a safe haven.
