How many universities can boast a design so unified that it’s protected by law? Aarhus Universitet, right here before you, can. Founded in 1928, Aarhus Universitet is Denmark’s second oldest university, born from a desire to offer more educational opportunities beyond the crowded halls of Copenhagen. From the very first yellow brick laid in 1933, the campus has blossomed under the guidance of the architectural firm C. F. Møller Architects. Their vision, a harmonious blend of minimalist functionalism and traditional Danish aesthetics, has resulted in a visually stunning campus. Even today, every new building echoes the characteristic yellow brick and tile, a testament to their enduring design. This unique look wasn’t always appreciated. Locals in the 1930s found the initial buildings a tad too minimalist. This led to the Main Building, finished in 1946, incorporating more classical elements and lavish materials. During World War II, the campus faced a different challenge – occupation. The Gestapo commandeered student residences, prompting a daring request from the Danish resistance to their allies in London. They requested an airstrike on those specific buildings, a move that, while tragic in its civilian casualties, successfully disrupted the Gestapo’s operations. Today, Aarhus Universitet is a vibrant hub of learning and research, with over 30,000 students. Its yellow brick buildings, standing as a testament to its history and architectural vision, invite you to explore their stories.
