Long ago in 1842 Hurstbridge began its story. It wasn’t always Hurstbridge though. Initially known as Allwood after a homestead it was later renamed. The name change happened in 1924. It honored Henry Hurst the builder of the first log bridge across the Diamond Creek. This bridge was crucial to the area’s development.

Hurstbridge’s early years were closely tied to agriculture. Orchards flourished providing fruit for Melbourne. In 1912 a railway line extended to Hurstbridge. This rail line was vital. It facilitated the transport of fruit. It also led to the growth of the town itself.

The town’s history isn’t without drama. Henry Hurst met a tragic end in 1866. He was killed by the bushranger Robert Bourke. Bourke’s capture and subsequent hanging added a dark chapter to Hurstbridge’s narrative. A tree near where Bourke was apprehended is still known as Bourke’s Tree. It serves as a stark reminder of the area’s past.

Post-war development saw Hurstbridge transform. Electricity arrived in 1957. The town continued to evolve. It became a place where families artists and musicians coexisted. It developed a unique blend of country and city living.

Today Hurstbridge boasts a vibrant community. It has numerous businesses and shops that serve both locals and visitors. The Hurstbridge Wattle Festival is a highlight. This annual event showcases the town’s character and history. Its roots are entwined with the area’s railway heritage. The festival is a testament to the enduring spirit of Hurstbridge. It’s a place with a rich past and a promising future. A place where history and modernity blend harmoniously. A place worth exploring.
