A silent giant. That’s Edificio La Nacional. This isn’t just any building. It’s a survivor. A testament to ingenuity and resilience.

Edificio La Nacional stands tall at the corner of Eje Central and Avenida Juárez. It’s a striking Art Deco structure. Its elegant lines hint at a rich history. It was the tallest building in Mexico City when it was completed in 1932. It’s a remarkable achievement considering the city’s earthquake-prone ground.

Architect Manuel Ortiz Monasterio designed this marvel. He was the director of the National Architecture School. He collaborated with Bernardo Calderon. Calderon ingeniously designed 100 foundation piles. These piles ensured the building’s stability. The building’s steel frame further enhanced its earthquake resistance. Edificio La Nacional has withstood numerous tremors. It even survived the devastating 1985 earthquake. Minor damage occurred only in the 2012 Oaxaca-Guerrero earthquake.

The name La Nacional comes from the National Insurance Company. The company originally occupied the building. An annex called La Nacional II was added in 1949. This annex houses a Sears store. The Sears café on the eighth floor offers breathtaking views of the Palacio de Bellas Artes.

Edificio La Nacional is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Mexico City’s growth and resilience. It’s a landmark that has witnessed the city’s evolution. It stands as a proud reminder of architectural innovation. Its survival through decades of earthquakes is a feat of engineering. Its history is interwoven with Mexico City’s history. Take a moment to appreciate this architectural icon. Its story resonates with the city itself.
