Place Jenny Alpha is in Paris’s 15th arrondissement. It sits in the Necker area. The square is located between 120 and 130 Avenue Félix Faure. It was inaugurated in June 2013.
Jenny Alpha lived not far from here. Her address was 39 Rue de l’Abbé Groult. She lived to be 100 years old. The French government recognized her with the Legion of Honor in 2009.
Born in Martinique in 1910, Jenny Alpha moved to Paris in 1929. Teaching was her initial goal. But the theater soon captivated her. She excelled as a singer and actress. Duke Ellington and Josephine Baker were among her collaborators.
During World War II, Jenny Alpha actively participated in the French Resistance. Her husband, Noël Henri Villard, a poet, was by her side. She met Francis Picabia in Nice. He painted her portrait in 1942. The Regional Museum of History and Ethnology of Martinique now holds it.
In 1947, Jenny Alpha modeled for a French postal stamp. It represented Martinique. Artist Lemagny chose her. He was a Grand Prize of Rome winner.
