Did the Almássy-palota always exude this quiet charm? It’s hard to imagine, standing here on the corner of Ötpacsirta and Múzeum streets, that this area was once a collection of humble, single-story mud houses. The Almássy-palota, as it stands today, whispers of a bygone era. It hints at a time when aristocrats, nobles, and wealthy citizens chose this very spot, nestled near the National Museum and the National Riding Hall, to build their grand homes. Commissioned by Count Kálmán Almássy and designed by Antal Gottgeb, the Almássy-palota’s construction began in the spring of 1877. Remarkably, this seemingly complex palace, surrounded by larger structures, was completed with incredible speed. The Almássy-palota’s solid facade, centered on the corner of the plot, belies the ingenuity of its design. Gottgeb cleverly positioned the main living quarters on the mezzanine floor, maximizing space and light. These quarters consisted of street-facing rooms, a light-filled dining room, a dressing room, and a bathroom. The supporting rooms, nestled within the boundaries of the plot, created a small, intimate courtyard, enhancing the sense of grandeur without overwhelming the neighboring buildings. Enter the Almássy-palota through the Ötpacsirta street entrance and find yourself in a charming, enclosed garden. The courtyard’s flower-patterned paving stones, a ivy-covered walls, and a tranquil fountain create a secluded oasis. Contemporary sculptures and busts of renowned Hungarian architects, like Ödön Lechner and Károly Kós, grace the courtyard. A charming yellow glass roof, supported by an elegant iron framework, covers the inviting staircase leading to the upper floors and down to the basement. Today, the Almássy-palota serves as the headquarters of the Association of Hungarian Architects. It also houses several professional organizations and the Hungarian Chamber of Architects. Their library, with its floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and volumes dating back over a century, is a hidden treasure. Downstairs, the former coach house has been transformed into the popular Építész Pince restaurant. One of its most striking features is a large ceramic mural by Margit Kovács. This mural, depicting a harvest scene in Badacsony, is a testament to Hungarian artistry. The Almássy-palota stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity and historical significance. It is a place where the echoes of grand balls and intellectual gatherings mingle with the quiet charm of a hidden courtyard. It is a place where history comes to life.
