Is there any link between a Parisian street and a comet? There is indeed right here on Rue Edmond Halley.
Welcome to Rue Edmond Halley. It may seem like any other street in Paris, but this place carries the name of a man who forever changed our understanding of the cosmos. Edmond Halley was born in 1656 in Haggerston a London suburb. He came from a family of merchants who became rich by selling salt and soap during the plague epidemics.
Halley was not French, but an Englishman of remarkable intellect. From a young age, Halley showed great intellectual abilities. His family pushed him to study Latin Greek and Hebrew. At the age of seventeen, he entered Oxford College and demonstrated great intellectual capacity. Halley was naturally curious and quickly developed a passion for science, especially astronomy. Some say his interest began in early childhood marked by the comets of 1664 and 1665.
At nineteen, he created a method for finding the aphelions the farthest point of an orbit and the eccentricities of planetary orbits. Soon after, he wrote to John Flamsteed, director of the Greenwich Observatory noting errors in the movements of two planets. Flamsteed immediately recognized Halley as a promising young astronomer. He encouraged him to publish his first scientific article in the Royal Society journal.
In 1676, the crown sent him to Saint Helena Island to map the southern sky. Besides mapping, he repeated Jean Richer’s experiment in Cayenne measuring the effect of latitude on the length of a seconds pendulum. He cataloged nebulae never seen from the Northern Hemisphere and charted Earth’s magnetic declinations during his voyage.
Halley showed that a compass needle does not always point directly to Earth’s geographic pole. Depending on the location, compass needles recorded deviations up to 20 degrees from the pole. Halley used his notes and collected data from other travelers to draw curves connecting points with identical magnetic variations. This new map allowed navigators to orient themselves using a compass by accounting for variations on the map. Halley’s magnetic cartography greatly advanced the science founded by William Gilbert in 1600.
Halley also used his voyage to create meteorological charts studying ocean currents and noting the behavior of aquatic animals. He observed a transit of Mercury and later published observation notes proposing a method to determine the Earth’s distance from the Sun during Venus transits.
Halley is best known for the comet named after him. Though not its discoverer, he observed it. His eulogy in the Royal Academy of Sciences history in 1765 recounts his meeting with Hevelius and his sighting of the 1680 comet near Calais while traveling to Paris. Halley recognized it as a subject for research.
A month before visiting France with Newton, Halley saw the comet returning from perihelion. His visit to Hevelius aimed to settle a dispute about telescope construction. Halley was admitted to the Royal Society at twenty-two. Four years later, he married Mary Tooke, continuing his astronomical work. He became friends with Isaac Newton, urging him to publish his discoveries and overseeing the publication of Newton’s groundbreaking work in 1686.
