Was Obod always two villages? No. This hamlet, nestled on the Adriatic coast 16 km southeast of Dubrovnik, is divided into Gornji (Upper) and Donji (Lower) Obod. Obod sits right at the entrance to the Konavle municipality if you’re coming from Dubrovnik. Find it along the Adriatic tourist road, just a kilometer north of Cavtat. Obod wasn’t always a sleepy tourist stop. During the time of the Dubrovnik Republic, Obod, along with Cavtat, was part of western Konavle. This area was ruled by the Bosnian duke Radoslav Pavlović, adding a layer of complexity to the region’s history. Obod’s story, like many in this region, takes a dark turn during the Croatian War of Independence. The once-thriving hamlet was completely destroyed, looted, and burned. What you see today is a testament to the resilience of the people of Obod. Every building, every home, is a mark of their determination to rebuild after the devastation. The spirit of Obod lives on, particularly in their celebration of St. Anne, the village’s patron saint, every July 26th. While tourism is the primary economic driver now, the scars of the past remain a part of Obod’s identity.
