Imagine a time when London faced serious water stress. The Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works stands before us. It is a testament to innovation. This plant helps ensure a reliable water supply for Londoners.
The Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works also known as the Beckton Desalination Plant sits adjacent to the Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. This location is no accident. The plant cleverly uses the brackish water from the River Thames. Through reverse osmosis, this once unusable water transforms into drinkable water.
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, opened the Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works on June 2, 2010. It marked a first for the UK. It was the first desalination plant of its kind. The Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works was built by a consortium. Interserve Atkins Water and Acciona Agua worked together on the project.
Originally, the Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works aimed to supply 150 million litres of water daily. This could serve 900000 Londoners. By 2023 it only operated on three occasions. It also only produced two-thirds of its planned capacity.
Much of the area it supplies faces water stress. London, Swindon, and Oxford often see hosepipe bans. These happen even during minor droughts. The Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works reduces these bans. It also postpones the risk of severe water rationing.
The Water Act of 2003 played a role. It ended the ban on using the Tideway as a water source for drinking. This ban was no longer needed to protect public health. Broadway Malyan designed the Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works.
The plant was planned to cater for 400000 households. That is 900000 people. It uses an 8-mile pipe to pump water to north-east London. This pipe can hold 14 million litres. The peak energy consumption is 17.6 MW. The average is 14 MW. This means it uses 2.27 kWh per cubic metre of water.
In 2022, Thames Water revised the plant’s usable output. It went down to 100 megalitres per day. This was because of unrealistic expectations in the design. The Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works cost £250 million. This includes the pipeline. Construction minimized disturbance to residents.
Thames Water had planned to build four more desalination plants. This plan has not progressed. The plant takes water during the last three hours of ebb tide. This minimizes salinity. Water undergoes settlement and filtration. Then reverse osmosis removes the salinity. Mineral salts are added before final purification.
The Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works is used during low water supply and high demand. Its license requires it to operate only when the river flows at Teddington are low. It can also be used in emergencies.
Some sources said the plant had been mothballed. High running costs were the reason. It was not used in the dry summer of 2022 due to planned work. Some MPs call it a white elephant. It has operated just three times since opening.
Ken Livingstone criticized the plant in 2007. He called it misguided and unnecessary. He said Thames Water should reduce leakage instead. Boris Johnson approved the plans in 2008.
