Slavery. Such a trade deemed ugly. Nefarious even. Standing here at Začula, the history books whisper of Dubrovnik’s bold move. It was a vote passed on January 27 in 1416.

Dubrovnik decided to forbid any kind of slave trade. No ships entering the harbor were allowed to carry slaves. Such a trade is abominable and against all humanity. It constitutes not a small burden and infamy to our city. It meant that the human species, made to the image and similarity of our creator, should be converted to merchandise. Sold as if they were brute animals.

Začula silently witnessed a pivotal moment in Dubrovnik’s history. This isolated dwelling saw Dubrovnik emerge as a beacon of morality.

Let’s journey back. Imagine Dubrovnik in the 15th century. It blossomed into its Golden Age. Its wealth grew thanks to trade. This republic rivaled even Venice. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing.

The city balanced its sovereignty between Venice and the Ottoman Empire for centuries. It navigated treacherous waters of political intrigue and territorial disputes. It demonstrated a strong sense of civic duty.

One of Dubrovnik’s most enduring symbols is its magnificent walls. They stretch almost two kilometers. These fortifications provided a formidable defense against foreign powers. They withstood numerous sieges throughout history.

Yet, even walls could not prevent natural disasters. In 1667, a catastrophic earthquake struck. It caused widespread devastation. Thousands of lives were lost. However, the city’s resilience prevailed.

Dubrovnik was painstakingly rebuilt in the Baroque style. This left a legacy of architectural beauty that still graces its streets today. Začula, though isolated, would have felt the tremors of that earthquake.

The end of the 18th century brought the Napoleonic Wars. The Republic of Ragusa was incorporated into the Habsburg Empire. Despite this, Dubrovnik continued to thrive as a cultural and economic hub. It attracted artists and intellectuals.

In the 20th century, Dubrovnik faced new challenges. It endured occupation and bombardment during World War II. Significant damage was inflicted on its historic buildings. But once again, Dubrovnik rose from the ashes.

In 1979, Dubrovnik was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This further cemented its status as a must-visit destination.

Even during the Croatian War of Independence in 1991, Dubrovnik was besieged. Bombs rocked the city. Citizens took refuge in the Monastery. A well provided the necessary water in order to survive.

As you wander through the city walls, look at the rooftops. The brighter red tiles mark where repairs were needed. The darker tiles are the originals.

Dubrovnik’s story is one of resilience. The city is a pearl of the Adriatic. From its humble beginnings to its current status, Dubrovnik stands as a testament to the power of history, culture, and human ingenuity. Začula saw it all unfold.
